There are 50 varieties of watermelon, varying in appearance: round, oval, baby, with bright green streaked or spotted skin color, with white or yellow patches.
Watermelon is the fruit with the highest water content of all: as much as 95 percent of the pulp is water, the rest being natural sugars. The calorie count – 15 kcal/100 g – guarantees it a place in any diet, from the strictest slimming diets – thanks to its low calorie content, precisely, but also to its satiating effect – and hypoglycemic diets, because it is very low in sugars (less than 4 g/100 g versus 11 in grapes, for example), to those for those who do sports (it helps replenish fluids lost through sweat). It provides a good supply of vitamin A and, a property not to be underestimated, owes its cheerful bright red color to lycopene, an antioxidant with anti-aging action also contained in tomatoes.
